Creating a hammock might seem simple with a basic frame, a few bamboo sticks, and some yarn but the truth is far more intricate. The art of weaving a hammock is a skill that takes time, patience, and dedication to master. It often takes a new weaver up to a year to truly perfect the craft.

Each hammock takes up to 10 days to complete, using over 1 kilometre of premium-quality yarn and forming an astonishing 40,000 loops by hand. As result, we can enjoy the hammock that’s not only stunning but also supremely comfortable. The elasticity of the weave and the generous size make it perfect for lounging, even lying diagonally for the ultimate relaxation.

OUR STORY - CREATING OPPORTUNITIES

We are the Hammock-Maker Housewife Association of Chiang Kong Hammock Art, a community of skilled artisans made up of Akha, Lahu, Khamu, and Northern Thai ethnic groups. Together, we carry on a beautiful craft, blending tradition, innovation, and a dedication to quality.

Though hammocks are not native to Asia, their story in Thailand began in 1987 when a European textile engineer introduced the art of "Mexican-style" hammocks to our region. We were fortunate to learn from him for many years, refining our skills and mastering the craft. In 2010, when he retired, we partnered with Thai Tribal Crafts to continue this meaningful work independently. Since then, we've poured our hearts into creating better, more sophisticated hammocks. Among our proudest achievements are the V-Hammock and Resort Hammock—innovations that set new standards in comfort and craftsmanship.

Our hammocks take time, care, and expertise to make, and as they become more intricate, the work becomes more rewarding. We’ve made it a priority to pay fair wages and ensure every weaver benefits from their skills. Our weavers work from home, giving them the freedom to weave as little or as much as they choose, earning fair compensation for every hammock they complete. Those eager to learn advanced techniques, like creating V-Hammocks, Resort Hammocks, or Sitting Hammocks, are trained at no cost and paid higher rates for their expertise.

Beyond weaving, we’re a community that looks out for one another. We maintain an emergency fund to provide support during times of hardship, such as illness, accidents, or crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. But the true highlight of our year is our annual assembly—a time for celebration and connection, where we share the remaining proceeds among our weavers, recognising their hard work and dedication. Every hammock we make carries not just craftsmanship but also the story of the people who wove it, their resilience, and their pride.
